For millennia armor and swords have been used. From their use on ancient battlefields to today they have changed dramatically but the use is still the same. They are not just used on the battlefields but also collected for their deadly beauty.
Medieval Armor and Swords
Originally armor was simply made from hides, fur and bones. This type of armor was a lamellar. This means
that the armor was made of layers. As the armor evolved pieces of metal were added. This medieval armor
eventually progressed into full suits of armor. This was the time of the Knights and lasted for several
hundred years. During this time not only did the armor advance significantly but so did the weapons that
were used.
Medieval swords initially started out as 3 feet long and were made of soft copper.
They evolved into an array of deadly weapons made out of steel. The swords grew into broadswords, sideswords and greatswords. Other
weapons of the time were maces, flails and war hammers all of them equally deadly when used in the right
situation. With the advent of the gun medieval armor and weapons began to decline. Today armor is now made
from Kevlar and Dyneema and worn on modern battlefields.
Samurai Armor and Swords
Not only was the armor and weapons used in medieval times amazing but so were the armor and weapons of the
samurai warrior. The samurai reigned as the supreme warriors in Japan for a thousand years up to the late
19th century.
The samurai armor was a lamellar type of armor. Along with
this splendid armor were beautiful but deadly weapons. The samurai swords used were primarily the Katana (long sword) and
Wakizishi (short sword). The armor and swords also evolved in Japan but not to the extent of the medieval
armor. However the excellent craftsmanship was the same.
